Every saturday morning between 6 and 9 am car enthusiasts from all over southern California converge on a parking lot near Irvine to peak under each others skirts. Men of all ages, shapes and cholesterol levels meet to drink coffee and talk cars while their wives and children sleep in.
What makes this 20 year tradition majestic is the time in which it takes place. As the sun comes up and glistens off the rare and winsome creatures parked side by side like a motley army ready to do battle or burnout. Sadly most of them will be driven home with great care and a hispanic cleaning lady's respect for the law.
I was given the opportunity to drive the very rare Mercedes SLR Sterline Moss edition to the event. Arriving in it was similar to arriving steering Miley Cyress's Vagina. The reaction was strong to say the least.
The experience of driving this million dollar sled with a 3 centimeter tall windscreen could feel a little unique to anyone who has never piloted a cigarette boat in a category 9 hurricane. The turbulence is so ferocious that you get no sense of the power underfoot until your eyeballs are touching behind your head. This is a F16 fighter jet with the wings cut off. Truly, shockingly amazing. Sterling would of been proud.
As a boy I wished more than anything I could be SpeedRacer. That dream came true as the sun was rising this morning.
If you are the least bit interested in cars I strongly recommend checking this out one morning.
